The Northern Ramparts Shortlisted for the 2024 Guernsey Design Awards

An Amazing Coastal Project | From Fort to Family Home

On a former fort site, a circular timber and stone coastal dwelling with a large structural circular roof light in the centre of the ceiling that floods the interiors with natural light, is sympathetically built and designed with local materials and features thermally efficient casement windows and doors that overlook the Atlantic coast.

Designed by SOUP Architects, the circular coastal home in Alderney, Channel Islands, was built in an exposed coastal site. Its expansive structural frameless circular rooflight connects the structure to its maritime environment, emulating an observation point towards the Atlantic Ocean.

The Northern Ramparts has been listed in the “Single Residential New Build” category which celebrates residential developments that are ultra unique, modern, sustainable or celebrate its local landscape.

The Guernsey Design Awards said:

Prioritising thermal efficiency, The Northern Ramparts incorporates green technologies such as energy-efficient lighting, underfloor heating, and rainwater harvesting. The house stands as a harmonious blend of history and modernity, deserving recognition for its innovative design and commitment to preserving Alderney’s unique heritage.

Well done to all involved as we eagerly await the results!
